Qi (pronounced as “Key”) is a poetess who brings passion, praise and a sense of flare to creating a unique flow to music. In Chinese, Qi means air, breath, vital energy; the energy which circulates in all living entities and can be shown in manifestation. In her writing, Qi’s goal is to bring forth the strength and resilience of a woman, positivity, life and keys to success.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Qi was exposed to music at an early age. She was surrounded by music and it was a part of their home life. Her dad played music as the family cleaned on Saturday mornings and she has pleasant memories of sitting on the couch with her dad listening to Luther Vandross and other sultry R&B and jazz music. Her mother placed a firm spiritual foundation which created her roots and love for gospel and praise/worship music. Qi attended performing arts public schools in elementary and middle school and excelled at playing viola. She credits her influence and love for poetry from those early years and Biblical foundation…namely the Book of Psalms, Proverbs and Song of Solomon. Her Shreveport roots are also a key factor in who she is and how she sees the world. She grew up in a place where it was common for people to “work to live” and to demonstrate a sense of a community and connectiveness. Qi’s parents modeled this, nurturing her principles and values for helping others and her desire to reach out to others as Christ did showing love, unity, sharing of ideas and intimacy that are “ties” that bind us together as one.
Qi just released her first spoken word as a collaborative effort with Derrick L. Wyatt. Her poem, “No Words”, was recorded and produced on Derrick’s first album titled “The Abstract Stream Vol 1.” She wrote this piece during the pandemic and credits encouragement from Jill Scott to listeners during an Instagram Versuz with her motivation to share her creativity with others. Maya Angelou, Floetry, and Jill Scott are some of the authors who influence Qi’s poetry and Spoken Word style; her desire is to share love, peace, pain, truth and passionate vibes that transcend time, tell short stories and brings a sense of empowerment.
